Oral surgery is often an important step toward improving your dental health, whether it involves removing wisdom teeth, placing implants, or preparing for orthodontic treatment. While the procedure itself is crucial, what you do afterward plays an equally big role in how quickly and comfortably you recover.
Here are five simple ways to help your body heal faster after oral surgery.
1. Follow Your Post-Op Instructions Carefully
Every oral surgery case is unique, so the best recovery routine is the one designed specifically for you. Be sure to follow your dentist or oral surgeon’s instructions closely, especially regarding rest, medication, and when to resume eating or brushing.
It can be tempting to search for recovery shortcuts online, but no two recoveries are exactly the same. Trust the guidance you’ve been given, and reach out to your dental team if something does not feel right. A quick call can often clear up concerns before they become complications.
2. Keep the Surgical Site Clean (But Be Gentle)
Keeping your mouth clean helps prevent infection and supports faster healing, but it is important to be gentle. For the first 24 hours, avoid rinsing or brushing near the surgical area. After that, use a mild saltwater rinse (½ teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water) a few times a day to reduce bacteria and soothe the tissues.
Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and avoid alcohol-based mouthwashes until your dentist says it is safe. If you are unsure about any product, ask before using it. Your dental team can guide you on what is best during recovery.
3. Eat Smart: Choose Healing-Friendly Foods
The foods you eat can make a real difference in how quickly your mouth feels better. For the first few days, focus on soft, cool options such as yogurt, mashed potatoes, soups that are not too hot, applesauce, and smoothies.
Avoid hard, crunchy, or spicy foods that might irritate the surgical site. It is also best to skip drinking through straws, since the suction can dislodge the blood clot that protects the healing area. Staying hydrated with water is one of the simplest and most effective ways to support recovery.
4. Manage Swelling and Discomfort Naturally
Some swelling and mild discomfort are normal after oral surgery. To help reduce swelling, apply an ice pack to the outside of your face for 15 minutes at a time during the first day or two. Keeping your head elevated, especially when resting, can also minimize swelling.
After 48 hours, gentle warmth may feel more soothing than cold. Always place a soft cloth between your skin and the ice or heating pad to protect your skin. Over-the-counter pain relief can also help, but follow your dentist’s recommendations for what is safe to take.
5. Give Your Body Time: Rest Is Part of Recovery
Healing takes time, and rest is an important part of the process. Plan to rest for the first couple of days after your procedure and avoid strenuous activity. Exercise, heavy lifting, and bending over can increase bleeding or swelling.
Listen to your body. It will tell you when it is ready to get back to normal routines. Most people find that within a few days, discomfort begins to fade and energy levels start to return.
