YOUR ORAL HYGIENE WITH BRACES
Adopting The Best Habits For Orthodontic Treatment

BY TS ORTHODONTICS … Asheville, NC’s Favorite Family Orthodontist

No matter which treatment option you go with, some things don’t change. These best practices apply to any and all kinds of braces, and you will probably find that none of the treatment options are flawless or without discomfort. These are some of the basic oral hygiene rules to follow when you have braces, no matter what kind of braces they are.

Brush Often With Braces

When you have braces, brushing your teeth often is one of the most crucial habits to have if you want the end result to be a positive one. There is bacteria that naturally lives in your mouth, food can get caught, and when you have braces food and bacteria have countless new nooks and crannies to hide in and wreak their brand of havoc.

Of course they don’t stand a chance when you brush often. This helps prevent things like cavities, gingivitis, and decalcification (the beginning of a cavity). Of course brushing your teeth is important whether you have braces or not, but the margin for error narrows tremendously when you have braces. So, brush! Better to have a mouth that’s too clean than one that provides questionable housing for bacteria.

Don’t Forget To Floss, Too!

There’s a common misconception that flossing isn’t important, but it truly is, especially as you get older. Some of the things not flossing can eventually lead to are:

  • Gum disease
  • Receding gum line
  • Decalcification
  • Cavities between the teeth

Flossing is a great addition to any oral hygiene routine, especially when you have braces and there are added small spaces for bacteria to hide in.

Pro tip: floss before you brush or, at the very least, use mouth wash after flossing. The reason for this is simple: you’ve just brushed your teeth and then you decide to floss, pulling all that debris and bacteria from between your teeth out onto your nice, clean teeth. If you floss before brushing, it allows you to truly clean and disinfect the spaces between your teeth with your toothbrush, toothpaste, and mouth wash.

Follow Your Asheville Orthodontist’s Instructions

If your Asheville orthodontist tells you not to eat certain foods or to brush your teeth after meals, it’s probably because that’s what’s best for your teeth and the time and financial investment you’ve made in them. Orthodontists are professionals who help people obtain their very best smiles. When you begin your treatment, you’ll receive detailed instructions about what to do, what not to do, and some of the things you can expect when undergoing orthodontic treatment.

Stay Optimistic

There will be moments during your treatment process when you wish you didn’t have braces; this is completely normal. Some of those situations might be if you had an adjustment and it was especially uncomfortable, if your mouth feels tender and you’re craving a specific food item, or if you have a sore in your mouth from a bracket.

If you’re facing a challenge like this, remember that you’re on your way to a gorgeous smile! Once your braces are taken off, you’ll feel phenomenal and be able to eat whatever foods you want again. Bonus? You’ll have a beautifully aligned smile you can be proud of. If you’re working with us at TS Orthodontics, you’ll be traveling your shortest distance to a great smile.
