BRUSHING & FLOSSING WITH BRACES BY ASHEVILLE NC ORTHODONTIST
By TS OrthodonticsAsheville NC’s Favorite Family Orthodontist

Whether you go with invisible braces or traditional metal braces, certain things don’t change. These best oral hygiene habits – or best practices – will let you know what to expect while you’re undergoing treatment and how to handle any small issues you may encounter. Read on to learn some of the basic “rules” to follow when you have braces.

Brush Your Teeth… a Lot!

Brushing your teeth often is THE most important rule to follow when you have braces! Between the bacteria that naturally lives in your mouth, food getting caught, and brackets providing germs with more crevices to hide in, you absolutely should be brushing every single day, multiple times a day. Brushing often helps you to avoid things like decalcification, cavities, and other mouth-related problems. Of course this is true whether you have braces or not, but when you have braces, it’s even more important to take good care of your teeth.

…But Floss First.

Though a lot of people don’t think that flossing is that important, it actually really is, especially as you get older. Not flossing can cause all kinds of problems over time such as cavities between the teeth, receding gum line, gum disease, and decalcification. When you have braces, flossing becomes even more important. All of those little nooks and crannies are ideal for bacteria to hide in and start eating away at your teeth, so why not do everything in your power to keep your teeth clean and healthy?

The reason for flossing before brushing is simple: you don’t want to have nice, clean teeth and then floss and get all that bacteria right back onto your clean teeth. Flossing first will allow you to get the hard to reach spaces clear first, brush, and then use a rinse or mouthwash to finish and disinfect your mouth.

Follow What Your Asheville Orthodontist Says.

Chances are that if your Asheville Orthodontist tells you to do something (or not to do something), he or she has a very good reason! You will probably receive detailed instructions about what and what not to do, what and what not to eat, as well as safety precautions and recommendations.

Your Asheville orthodontist is a professional and does this every day. Following his or her advice is the best and easiest way for you to have a positive experience with braces.

Stay Positive!

There can be moments during your treatment where you just feel like calling it quits. Maybe your last adjustment really hurt, maybe you feel hungry because your mouth is sore and you can’t eat that chicken you’re craving, or maybe you fell asleep in an awkward way and got a sore in your mouth from one of the brackets.

It’s okay. I promise!

What helps in these kinds of situations is to keep your end goal in sight and remember that everything is temporary. Once you get through this treatment, you will have an amazing, beautiful, white smile that you can show off to the world every day!
