By TS ORTHODONTICS … Asheville NC’s Favorite Family Orthodontist

Are you considering braces for yourself or your child? If so, there are several different options in braces to consider. Did you know that there are braces available now that you can’t even see? That isn’t the only thing to consider, though. Is it important to you that the braces are somewhat easy to keep clean?

There are a number of things to consider when you think about getting braces and we’re here to help! Keep reading for an introduction to what you should take into consideration when choosing a type of braces.

Prioritize What’s Important When Considering The Type of Braces

When considering which type of braces, what is the most important aspect to you? By thinking about this you can make better decisions alongside your Asheville orthodontist about your braces and your best possible treatment option.

Some questions to consider are:

  • How long will your treatment take?
  • Is it important to you that no one can see your braces?
  • Is comfort a priority?
  • Can you commit to pumping up your oral health habits?
  • What does your budget look like?
  • How easy are the braces to take care of?

You can see that there are a lot of things to consider, but getting braces is an important milestone in life, so making a solid and well-informed decision can only help.

I’d like to go over some of the pros and cons for different types of braces now to help you get a better idea before you come in for a smile analysis.

Pros and Cons of Different Braces

The most common kind of braces you see on people are traditional metal braces. Metal braces are effective for all kinds of tooth placement issues, meaning that these kind of braces can be used even in the most extreme cases.

Pros: Metal braces are easy to take care of and less expensive than other kinds of braces.

Cons: Metal braces are very noticeable.

Ceramic braces have come a long way since they were first introduced! Though similar to traditional metal braces, they do have their distinctions.

Pros: Ceramic braces have a treatment length comparable to traditional braces and tend to be less noticeable.

Cons: Ceramic braces are more likely to get stains than traditional braces and they can be more expensive.

Lingual braces are similar to traditional metal braces with one major distinction: the brackets and wires go on the inside of the teeth! This makes them a top choice for people who can’t alter their appearance too noticeably all at once.

Pros: Since lingual braces are attached to the backs of your teeth, it doesn’t look like you have braces at all!

Cons: Lingual braces tend to be difficult to clean, are more expensive, adjustments take longer, and they can be less comfortable than other kinds of braces. Lingual braces also aren’t appropriate for extreme cases, so these are definitely not for everyone.

Invisalign® is another invisible option that you may have heard of. These kind of braces are different from the rest because these don’t involve brackets and wires; rather, Invisalign® consists of plastic trays you change out every 2-4 weeks.

Pros: With Invisalign®, you can eat and drink whatever you want and these braces are invisible.

Cons: These braces aren’t available for kids, can be lost, and tend to be more expensive.
